What 2 MB keeps
2 MB is generous enough that a full-resolution photo at 3000 pixels or more on the long side stays sharp. Detail, color, and fine texture come through almost untouched, so this is trimming rather than shrinking.
It is the right target when you want both quality and a smaller file for sending. Large print-worthy photos, detailed scans, and design exports all fit while staying clean for close inspection.
When 2 MB is the goal
Email attachments are the classic reason. Many mail systems flag files above a couple of megabytes, and getting a photo under 2 MB keeps it within most limits while preserving quality for the recipient.
For a permanently smaller file, you can convert to WebP instead. WebP often reaches the same visual quality at a smaller size, which helps when you plan to share or publish the image widely.
