eBay Listing Photo Size

eBay listing photo size at 1600×1600 for supersize zoom

eBay accepts photos from 500 pixels, but the supersize zoom feature is documented as requiring a larger image, with 1600 commonly cited. Drop your photos in and the studio exports a 1600-square eBay set, with the hero square-cropped and numbered 01.

  • Runs in your browser
  • Free, no signup

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop the photos

Up to twelve. For used or condition-sensitive items, more angles is better.

  2. 2

    The studio sets the spec

1600 × 1600 square JPG at quality 92, under eBay's 12 MB cap, supersize zoom enabled.

  3. 3

    Upload to eBay

Drag the ebay/ folder into the listing editor. Hero is 01, others follow in order.

What this eBay resizer does

1600 for supersize zoom

eBay's supersize zoom requires a larger image than the 500-px floor; 1600 is the value commonly required.

Square hero

eBay search shows a 1:1 thumbnail. The studio square-crops so descriptive edges survive into the result.

No overlays on the main photo

eBay's published guidelines prohibit borders, watermarks and text on the main image. The export does not add any.

How eBay compares to the other marketplaces

eBay accepts a wider photo count than any other marketplace covered (24 photos), with a 1600-pixel target driven by the supersize zoom feature. The table compares published rules side by side; the eBay row is highlighted.

Tips that help

  • 1

    Photograph the wear directly

A close-up of a scuff or stain answers the question a buyer would otherwise ask before bidding.

  • 2

More photos for used or condition-sensitive items

Three photos on a used MacBook leaves the buyer guessing about the things you did not show.

  • 3

Daylight or a quick white-balance fix

Indoor bulbs add a yellow cast. A window-lit shot or a phone-camera white-balance correction is enough.

  • 4

Do not use stock photos for used items

eBay's guidelines call out that the primary image should depict the item being sold.

What eBay's photo rules really ask for

eBay has a long-standing buyer base trained to scrutinise photos for condition. The platform's rules are looser than Amazon's, which puts more weight on what you choose to show. The sections below cover what the published rules say and how to use the 24 photo slots well.

The threshold that matters: 1600

eBay accepts 500 pixels as the minimum, but the supersize zoom feature (the one a buyer taps before committing on an expensive item) is documented as requiring a larger image, with 1600 commonly cited.

eBay listing photo size at 1600×1600 for supersize zoom

Below 1600 the supersize button does not appear. A used MacBook at 800 pixels is harder to evaluate for condition than the same MacBook at 1600, and that gap shows up in how confidently buyers act.

1600 on the long side is the studio's default. JPEGs at quality 92 land between 400 KB and 1.5 MB, well under eBay's 12 MB per-photo cap.

Square hero, landscape gallery

eBay search results show a 1:1 thumbnail. A landscape upload gets centre-cropped to fit, so descriptive edges disappear in the result a buyer clicks from.

Cropping square before upload puts the centre-crop decision in your hands. The studio's hero is locked to 1:1 and the overlay shows the area that survives.

Photos two onwards can stay landscape. The listing page shows them at native ratio in a vertical column; side angles, in-use shots and detail crops work well there.

What goes in each of the 24 slots

Slot one is the search thumbnail: the clearest front-on photo of the whole item, on a plain background.

Slot two onwards is for every angle a buyer would otherwise message you to ask about. For used electronics: back, sides, ports, hinges, brand stamp, serial sticker. For clothing: tag, fabric close-up, measurements next to a ruler, any wear. For vintage: every angle plus the underside.

There is no published eBay constraint on the number, but condition-sensitive items benefit from more photos. Eight to twelve is a reasonable range for used goods. For new items in original packaging, fewer is fine.

What the published guidelines explicitly disallow

Borders around the main image. Stickers, watermarks and overlay text on the main image are listed in the same section.

Stock manufacturer photos when listing a used or open-box item. eBay's guidelines call out that the photo should depict the actual item being sold.

Photos taken at very low resolution, anything below the 500-pixel acceptance floor.

These rules apply to the primary photo. Additional photos can include captions on or next to them, branded watermarks for handmade sellers, or composite layouts; the policy treats them differently.

What eBay's picture guidelines call out

eBay's picture guidelines are enforced lightly for accepted formats but explicitly for content. The patterns below are the ones called out in the published policy.

  • Borders, watermarks or added text on the main image

    Documented rule

Cause: Any frame, logo overlay, or text on the primary photo. eBay's guidelines forbid all three.

Fix: Re-export the photo without the overlay. The studio's export is clean by default.

  • Stock manufacturer photo on a used or open-box item

    Documented rule

Cause: Using a product-shot from the manufacturer's catalog rather than a photo of the actual item being sold.

Fix: Photograph the actual item. eBay's guidelines call this out specifically for used and open-box listings.

  • Supersize zoom does not appear on the listing

    Documented rule

Cause: Image is below the resolution threshold for the supersize zoom feature. 1600 on the long side is commonly cited.

Fix: Upload at 1600 on the long side. The studio's eBay default exports at 1600 × 1600.

  • Image below 500 pixels gets rejected

    Documented rule

Cause: 500 pixels on the longest side is the lower bound eBay accepts.

Fix: Source higher-resolution photos. A modern phone clears this with headroom.

  • Multiple items shown in the main image

    Observed pattern

Cause: The main photo includes bundled or comparison products that are not part of the listing.

Fix: Use slot two onwards for variants, accessories, or comparisons. Slot one is for the single item being sold.

eBay workflows the studio covers

Three eBay workflows the studio handles for used and condition-sensitive listings.

Used iPhone or laptop, full condition coverage

Listing a used device where condition is the buyer's main concern.

  1. 1Take 10–12 photos: front, back, sides, ports, top and bottom edges, screen on, accessories, brand stamp, serial-number sticker, and a tight crop of any visible wear.
  2. 2Drop them into the eBay resizer. The hero is set as the front-on shot automatically.
  3. 3Build the pack. Every photo exports at 1600 × 1600 so the supersize zoom is enabled across the listing.
  4. 4Upload the folder into the eBay listing editor in order.

Vintage furniture multi-angle workflow

Listing a vintage piece where condition and authenticity matter.

  1. 1Photograph the piece from every angle: front, back, both sides, top, underside, any maker's marks or stamps, and tight crops of any damage or repair.
  2. 2Add one in-context shot (in a room with scale) to help buyers visualise size.
  3. 3Drop all photos into the studio with eBay ticked. The hero defaults to the squarest front-on shot.
  4. 4Build the pack and upload. The supersize zoom on 1600-px photos lets buyers inspect condition without messaging.

Cross-listing the same item to eBay and Mercari

Same item, two different marketplaces, two different specs.

  1. 1Drop the photo set into the marketplace optimizer (the hub, not a per-platform page).
  2. 2Tick both eBay and Mercari.
  3. 3Build the pack. You get an ebay/ folder at 1600 × 1600 and a mercari/ folder at 1080 × 1080 from the same source photos.
  4. 4Upload each folder to its respective marketplace.

eBay category gotchas

eBay's category-specific photo requirements catch sellers most in Motors and Coins.

  • eBay Motors (vehicles)

    Documented

Vehicle listings have their own photo requirements, including multiple required angles (interior, exterior, VIN, odometer) and a higher photo limit than general categories.

  • Coins, currency, stamps

    Observed

These categories typically require obverse and reverse photos as separate slots, plus a slabbed-grade label shot if the item is graded.

  • Authenticity Guarantee categories

    Documented

For watches, sneakers and certain luxury handbags eBay routes through its Authenticity Guarantee. Listings need photos that let the authenticator confirm the item.

  • Multi-quantity listings

    Observed

If you list multiple identical items as a multi-quantity listing, the main image should show one unit. Showing a stack can confuse buyers about quantity.
