Etsy's seller handbook asks for 2000 pixels on the shortest side, and the search result shows the hero as a square. Drop your photos in and the studio exports a clean Etsy zip, with the hero square-cropped and numbered 01 and the gallery in upload order.
Drop your product photos
JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC. Up to 12 photos. Studio will pick the squarest one as your listing hero — you can swap it after.

How it works
1
Drop your photos
Up to ten. The squarest, largest one is suggested as the hero.
2
The studio sets the spec
Square crop, 2000 × 2000, JPG at quality 92, under Etsy's 20 MB cap.
3
Download and upload
An etsy/ folder with 01 = hero and 02 onwards = gallery in upload order.
What this Etsy resizer does
2000 on the shortest side
Matches Etsy's seller handbook recommendation. Sharp from a small search thumbnail to the listing-page zoom.
Hero stays square
Etsy centre-crops landscape uploads to fit the search thumbnail. The studio crops square up front so you decide what stays.
Numbered for the listing editor
Files come out 01-hero, 02, 03, so dragging the folder into Etsy places the hero first.
How Etsy compares to the other marketplaces
Etsy's 2000-square recommendation is the highest of any major marketplace except Shopify's theme-driven 2048. The table compares the published rules side by side; the Etsy row is highlighted.

Tips that help
1
Crop square before upload
The search thumbnail is 1:1. Square the hero up front so the centre-crop is yours, not Etsy's default.
2
Keep the hero background light or neutral
A busy or dark background loses detail at thumbnail size. Save mood for the gallery slots.
3
Photograph the product in use for slot two
An in-hand or in-context shot shows scale, which a flat product photo cannot.
4
Use daylight
Indoor bulbs add a yellow cast on screen. A window-lit shot is cleaner.
What Etsy's photo rules really ask for
Etsy's seller handbook gives you a size, a count and a file type. What it does not tell you is how the photo gets displayed once it is on Etsy. That display range (search thumbnail, grid card, zoom) is what 2000 pixels is sized for. Each rule below is read against that range.
2000 pixels on the shortest side
Etsy displays the hero photo at several sizes: a small square in mobile search, a larger square in desktop search, the hero on the listing page, and a pinch-zoom view that opens at click.
A 2000-pixel source is downsampled cleanly to every smaller size. Going below 2000 means the zoom view starts upscaling, which softens detail and reveals JPEG artefacts. Going above 2000 wastes upload time without improving display.
Etsy publishes 20 MB as the per-file maximum. A 2000-square JPEG at quality 92 typically lands between 400 KB and 1.5 MB, depending on detail, so the cap is not a constraint at this size.
Square hero because search is 1:1
Etsy's search result is a 1:1 thumbnail. Whatever shape the source is, the thumbnail gets a centre-crop to square. For a landscape upload that means the descriptive edges of the photo disappear in the result a buyer clicks from.
The fix is to crop square before upload, so the centre-crop is yours. The studio's hero slot is square by default and the crop overlay shows the area that will survive.
Photos two through ten can stay at their native aspect. The listing page shows them at their original ratio in a vertical column. Wide in-use shots and detail crops work well here.
Ten photo slots and how to use them
Slot one is the search thumbnail. The photo that explains the product in one glance belongs here. Light or neutral background reads better at thumbnail size than a busy one.
Read moreRead less
Slot two onwards is for everything else: in-use shots, detail crops, the back of the product, variations, packaging. There is no published Etsy guidance ranking the slots, but the listing-page order is the order buyers scroll, so the second photo is the next most-seen.
Two to four photos is a thin set. Eight to ten is a complete one. The studio caps at 12, which covers any realistic Etsy listing.
Backgrounds and light
Etsy does not require a particular background. The platform's identity covers handmade, vintage and small-batch goods, where a moody dark surface can read as well as a clean white one.
What matters more than the colour is keeping it consistent across the listing's photos. A buyer scrolling through a single listing reads mixed backgrounds as scattered.
Daylight near a window is the simplest light source for product photography. Indoor bulbs add a yellow cast that shows up on screens, so turn them off if you can.
What gets Etsy listings flagged
Etsy enforces a soft set of photo guidelines through its handbook and category-specific rules. Listings rarely get suppressed outright on photo grounds, but a few patterns lead to lower visibility or buyer complaints.
Hero photo does not show the listed item
Documented rule
Cause: The first photo is a mood-board or material flat-lay; the actual product is buried in slot four. Etsy's handbook is explicit that the first photo should make the product obvious.
Fix: Reorder so the clearest single-product shot is first. The studio names the hero 01 so reordering is a drag inside the listing editor.
AI-generated image not disclosed
Documented rule
Cause: Etsy requires sellers to disclose when product photos are AI-generated. An undisclosed AI image is treated as a policy violation.
Fix: If the image is AI-generated, mark it as such in the listing. The studio does not generate AI images; it only resizes what you upload.
Photo of a different (similar) item
Observed pattern
Cause: Photographing a sample or a previously-sold piece for a made-to-order listing without saying so. Buyers report a mismatch and the listing can be flagged.
Fix: Either retake the photo of the actual item, or disclose in the description that the photo is representative of the made-to-order product.
Hero photo is blurry on the listing-page zoom
Documented rule
Cause: Source image is below the 2000-pixel recommendation, so Etsy's CDN upscales for the zoom view and softens detail.
Fix: Upload at 2000 on the shortest side. The studio's Etsy default already targets that size.
Vintage listing photos do not depict the actual age
Documented rule
Cause: Etsy classifies 'Vintage' as 20+ years old. A photo that looks brand-new on a vintage listing draws buyer complaints and can be flagged.
Fix: Include at least one detail crop showing the patina, wear, or maker's mark that confirms age. Use a gallery slot for it.
Etsy workflows the studio covers
Three Etsy workflows the studio covers end-to-end. Each recipe assumes you have your source photos shot and ready.
New handmade listing, ten photos
Launching a new handmade product with a full photo set.
1Take 10 photos: clearest single-product shot, in-use shot, detail crop, back / underside, two variations, packaging, scale reference, and two styled flat-lays.
2Open the Etsy resizer and drop all 10 in. The squarest, largest one is suggested as the hero (numbered 01).
3Tap any other photo and use Set hero if you want a different image first.
4Click Build listing pack. Download the etsy/ folder.
5Drag the folder into the listing editor. The 01-prefixed file lands as the hero.
Refreshing an underperforming listing
An older listing has traffic but low conversions. The product is fine; the photos are not.
1Identify the slowest-converting listing in your Etsy stats dashboard.
2Re-shoot the hero on a cleaner background, then add two new gallery photos: a measurement reference and an in-use shot.
3Drop the new photos into the studio. Set the new hero as 01.
4Build the pack and replace the existing listing photos one at a time, keeping the slots that already work.
5Etsy re-crawls the listing within a day or two; rankings move on a longer cycle.
Pattern or digital-download listing
Listing a downloadable file (a knitting pattern, an SVG, a print-at-home design).
1Mock the digital file in use. For a printable poster, photograph it framed on a wall. For a pattern, photograph a finished sample.
2Use a second slot to show the file contents (a multi-page preview or a flat-lay of every page).
3Drop both into the studio with the in-use shot as the hero.
4Build the pack. Etsy lets you list digital products with regular photo slots.
Etsy category gotchas
Etsy categories sometimes override or supplement the handbook's general photo guidance.
Vintage (20+ years old)
Documented
Photos must depict the actual age and condition. A vintage listing with photos that look brand-new can be flagged. Include a detail crop showing patina, wear or a maker's mark.
Digital downloads
Observed
Use the photo slots to show the file in use (a printed mock-up, a finished sample) rather than uploading the digital file itself as the hero. Buyers see the slots before the download.
Made-to-order
Observed
If the photo is of a previous sample rather than the exact item being sold, disclose it in the description. Buyers can flag mismatches.
AI-generated visuals
Documented
Etsy requires sellers to disclose when photos or mockups are AI-generated. An undisclosed AI image is a policy violation.
