Resize an image for an Instagram profile picture

Instagram displays your profile photo as a small circle and stores it around 320x320, so a square image with the face centered gives the cleanest result. The tool below is set to 320 by 320.

Square source, circular crop

Instagram shows profile pictures inside a circle but works from a square image, displayed at roughly 320x320. Upload a square and it crops a circle out of the middle.

That means the corners of your square are always cut off. Keep the face or logo centered and well inside the middle so nothing important lands in a corner. The resize tool is preset to 320 by 320.

Give it a bigger square if you can

320x320 is how Instagram displays the photo, but uploading a slightly larger square, like 500x500, gives the app a sharper source to scale from. Either way, keep it square.

A tightly cropped headshot reads far better in a small circle than a wide scene. Fill the frame with the subject so it is recognizable at thumbnail size.

Trim the file if needed

A profile picture is a tiny file, so size is rarely an issue. If an upload still balks, compress it to a KB target to be safe.

Processing runs in your browser, so the photo never uploads. Your picture stays on your device until you set it.
