Resize an image to 500x500 pixels

A versatile square

500 pixels square is large enough to look sharp on most screens yet small enough to stay a light file. That balance makes it a default for avatars, product thumbnails, and marketplace listings.

It is a 1:1 ratio, so crop square with the subject centered. Resize to a custom size if a particular platform wants something other than 500.

Crop, do not stretch

A rectangular photo has to lose some width or height to become a square. Keep the focal point in the middle so the crop trims background rather than the subject.

Start from the largest version you have. Scaling a big photo down to 500x500 stays crisp, while enlarging a small one looks soft.

Compress if the upload box is strict

A 500x500 JPEG usually lands well under 200 KB. If a form needs less, compress to an exact KB target after resizing.
